Ramallah Hill of God

Download Pattern PDF

Ramallah directly translates to "Hill of God." The city no doubt earned its name from its beautiful rolling hills and breathtaking views.

Ramallah Tatreez is probably one of the most recognizable embroidery styles in Palestine. It is known for its bold red embroidery, most often stitched on white or black linen, and frequently accented with bright orange appliqué or gold couching thread purchased from Bethlehem. Thanks to the women of Ramallah, who continued wearing and stitching their traditional dress well after the Nakba, this embroidery tradition remains one of the best preserved today.

This pattern was inspired by a beautiful 1920s Ramallah thobe featured in Stitches of Palestine by Salua Qidan and Laila Mushahwar. The combination of black linen, red Tatreez, and gold couching immediately stood out to us. We adapted the original design into a stitchable pattern, making a few thoughtful changes so it can be completed without using couching.
